Precision air conditioning equipment for data centers
Precision air conditioning systems are designed to maintain controlled temperature, humidity , and airflow conditions in facilities requiring high operational reliability, such as data centers , server rooms, telecommunications rooms, laboratories, and industrial control areas. Unlike conventional air conditioning systems, these systems are designed for continuous operation, handling high sensible heat loads and maintaining stable environmental conditions to protect electronic equipment and ensure its proper functioning.
Within this category, two main technologies stand out: direct expansion (DX) systems and water-cooled systems , whose selection depends on the required thermal capacity, the available infrastructure, energy efficiency and the operating conditions of each installation.

Direct Expansion (DX) Equipment
Direct expansion precision air conditioners use a refrigeration circuit in which the refrigerant absorbs heat from the room air via an evaporator coil. The heat is then transferred to the outside through a condenser, which can be air-cooled or water-cooled, depending on the system design.
These systems are characterized by their installation flexibility, their ability to respond quickly to variations in thermal load, and their availability in different configurations, such as perimeter units, top or bottom discharge units, and in-row systems , installed between server racks.
Main applications:
Small and medium-sized data centers.
Server and telecommunications rooms.
Control and monitoring rooms.
Facilities that require independent climate control for each room or zone.
Among its main advantages are the relative ease of installation, the autonomy of each unit, and the possibility of expanding cooling capacity in stages. However, in large-scale installations, its efficiency and scalability must be evaluated considering the distribution of units, the heat rejection system, and the electrical consumption of the compressors.

Water-cooled precision equipment
Water-cooled precision air conditioning systems typically use chilled water supplied by a chiller . Return air from the room passes through a coil containing the chilled water, transferring its heat load to the hydraulic circuit. The water then returns to the chiller to release the heat through the appropriate cooling system.
This solution is particularly suitable for medium and large data centers, where high cooling capacity, continuous operation and a centralized infrastructure that facilitates system management and maintenance are required.
Main applications:
Enterprise and high-capacity data centers.
Mission-critical facilities with equipment redundancy.
Rooms with high thermal load densities.
Infrastructures with existing central chilled water plants.
Among its advantages are the ability to centralize cooling, facilitate capacity expansion, and leverage energy efficiency strategies, such as optimizing the chilled water plant and using free cooling , when climatic conditions and the design allow. Key considerations include the need for adequate hydraulic infrastructure, pumping systems, flow control, and a backup strategy to ensure service continuity.
Conclusion
Selecting a precision air conditioning system requires considering current and future heat loads, rack power density, infrastructure availability, required redundancy, and total cost of ownership. Direct expansion systems offer a flexible and modular solution, while water-cooled systems can provide operational and energy advantages in larger facilities. In both cases, proper air distribution design, temperature control, continuous monitoring, and redundancy are essential to ensuring data center availability and reliability.
