The importance of duct calculations when sizing HVAC equipment

In the design and installation of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, one of the most common and costly mistakes is underestimating the importance of ductwork calculations .

A well-selected piece of equipment can fail prematurely if the air distribution system was not properly sized.



Why are duct calculations so important?

The ductwork system is responsible for transporting the treated air to the conditioned spaces. If the ducts are not properly designed, the equipment will operate outside its optimal parameters.

A proper calculation allows:

  • Ensure the correct airflow (CFM) .

  • Maintain static pressure within the range recommended by the manufacturer .

  • Avoid excessive energy losses.

  • Reduce noise levels.

  • Improve efficiency and thermal comfort.

When ducts are too small, too long, have too many bends or restrictions, the system generates high static pressure , forcing the equipment to overwork.


Consequences of poor installation practices

An installation without technical calculations can generate problems in the medium and long term:

🔴 1. Fan motor overload

The fan is working harder than it should to move the air, which can cause:

  • Overheating

  • Premature bearing damage

  • Electrical failures

🔴 2. Evaporator freezing

If the airflow is insufficient:

  • The coil temperature drops too low

  • Ice forms

  • Cooling capacity is reduced

  • The compressor may be damaged.

🔴 3. Increase in electricity consumption

A system forced to work against high pressure consumes more energy, increasing operating costs.

🔴 4. Reduced equipment lifespan

The combination of mechanical overload, irregular cycles, and poor ventilation directly impacts the system's durability.

Best practices in ductwork design

To avoid these problems, it is essential to:

✔ Perform thermal load calculations.

✔ Size ducts according to the required flow and recommended speed.

✔ Consider friction losses and fittings.

✔ Check the total external static pressure of the equipment.

✔ Balance the system after installation.

An HVAC system is not just the equipment; it is the complete set of design, layout, and installation.
